About me
For more than thirty years I have worked professionally on private yachts and commercial vessels as a captain, engineer, deck officer and onboard operator, across both sail and power.
My background is practical, hands-on and operational.
I am not a paper captain and I am not a lifestyle coach.
My work is focused on running boats properly, safely and quietly.
I have served on vessels ranging from small tenders and coastal cruising yachts through to large sailing and motor yachts in the 150–200 foot range, operating on the Pacific Northwest coast, the U.S. West Coast, the Caribbean, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and international waters.
Today, I provide professional yacht delivery, skippered vessel operation and technical support for owners and operators who prefer their vessel to be handled by an experienced professional.
Professional Background
I began my career working dockside and in operational roles before moving into full-time professional yachting. Early work included dock operations, small craft handling, vessel maintenance and mechanical support while building sea time and practical systems knowledge.
I later spent several years working at the
Royal Vancouver Yacht Club, where I supported day-to-day marine operations, maintenance and small-vessel servicing while continuing to develop practical mechanical, electrical and systems skills.
From there, I transitioned into full-time professional yachting and offshore delivery work.
Over the course of my career I have worked in the following roles:
Captain
Engineer
First Mate / Deck Officer
Delivery Skipper
Refit and commissioning support
Onboard technical and systems specialist
I have operated both power and sailing vessels, including complex modern yachts with integrated navigation systems, digital networks, hydraulics, stabilizers, and high-load electrical systems.
Sea Time and Operational Experience
My professional experience includes:
Three Atlantic crossings
Multiple transits of the Panama Canal
Extensive coastal delivery work on both the North American west coast and east coast
Offshore and near-coastal operations in variable and heavy weather
Remote cruising logistics and vessel support
I have planned and executed long-distance deliveries, repositioning voyages and seasonal movements of yachts between shipyards, marinas and cruising grounds.
Engineering and Systems Experience
A major part of my career has been hands-on marine engineering and onboard systems work.
This includes:
Extensive vessel electrical work and fault tracing
Navigation, sensor and network backbone installations
Mast and rigging wiring on large sailing yachts
Re-routing and replacement of data, power and control cabling
At-sea mechanical maintenance and repairs, including seawater pumps, impellers and auxiliary systems
I have spent significant time on large sailing yachts performing complete mast cabling and systems change-outs following lightning strikes, including multiple full re-runs of electrical and data systems through masts and internal trunks.
I have also carried out hydraulic systems work on large sailing yachts, including:
removal and replacement of multiple hydraulic lines
specification and coordination of custom-fabricated hydraulic hoses
refit logistics and reinstallation support
In addition, I have been directly involved in major machinery removal and refit work, including partial generator disassembly to allow extraction through limited access hatches, followed by refit coordination and reinstallation support.
My experience is practical, field-based and earned underway and in shipyards, not limited to bench work.
Refit, Commissioning and Pre-Sale Support
I regularly assist owners and clients with refit planning, commissioning and delivery readiness.
This has included:
pre-sale refit and professional detailing projects
full interior and soft-goods restoration
deep bilge and machinery space remediation
engine-room restoration and presentation
vessel staging and operational readiness
These projects have directly supported successful and timely vessel sales and commissioning outcomes.
My focus during refits is always on how a vessel will actually be operated, maintained and supported after leaving the yard.
Vessel Operations and Command
As a captain and delivery skipper, my operating style is calm, structured and conservative.
I emphasize:
disciplined passage planning
conservative weather decision-making
crew management and fatigue control
clean bridge procedures
clear operational roles
reliable onboard routines
I run vessels quietly and professionally.
My goal is uneventful passages and predictable outcomes.
Professional Scope Today
My current services focus on:
Professional yacht delivery
Skippered vessel operation
Private and charter vessel command
Commissioning and post-refit delivery support
Pre-purchase and operational evaluation
Technical and systems support for owners and operators
I work with both power and sailing yachts.
Boundaries and Operating Philosophy
I do not operate as a training captain by default.
Owner participation at the helm or structured training is offered only by prior agreement and entirely at the captain’s discretion.
My services are designed for clients who prefer their vessel to be operated professionally, without ambiguity in command or operational responsibility.
Personal Operating Standard
My background includes formal marine training and professional certification, combined with decades of practical experience in real operating environments.
I bring:
strong mechanical and electrical competence
deep familiarity with modern integrated navigation systems
practical problem-solving under way
and an understanding of how yachts actually behave offshore and in tight coastal conditions
Above all, I value professionalism, preparation and quiet competence.
A well-run vessel should feel boring in the best possible way.
That is how I operate.
